Too Much Responsibility

by Monica on November 17, 2009

children's booksI always pray with the peapod squad on the way to school (and no, I do NOT close my eyes while driving). This morning as I uttered the “amen” at the end of the prayer, Split quickly spoke up.

Split: Oh no! You forgot something, Mommy!”

Me: What?

Split: The Library!

Me: What about the Library? Why did I need to pray about the Library? I know your class goes today. We asked God to protect you today, I’m sure He knows that includes your trip to the Library.

Split (growling, yes literally growling): Ugh. I’ll just tell Him myself. Dear God, please remember me to be quiet at the Library because it’s so important for me to be quiet there. Amen.

Me: Are we finished now?

Split: Yes, but that was SO close! My friends would be really mad if God let me talk too much at the Library and then we couldn’t go back there ever ever ever again and they might not learn how to read!

OK, really?  The entire literary future of twenty 4-year-olds hinges on my memory at 8am?

That is way too much responsibility.

A Mom’s Prayer on the First Day of School

by Monica on August 25, 2009

This is from Shannon at Rocks In My Dryer. It really spoke to me, so I wanted to share.

~~~~
Here we are again, Lord. Their backpacks are loaded and their faces are scrubbed and their lunch accounts are full.
And I know you’ll walk with them, Lord. You always do. But a mom still has to ask.
Will You walk with them? Will You whisper to them what they need to hear, when I’m not there to whisper it?
Will You please, oh please, cover their school with the protection only You can give, and will You keep harm far away?
Will You make their minds strong and ready to learn? Will You help them understand that hard work honors the One who created them?
Will You guide their teachers, giving them patience and wisdom and creativity and more patience? Will You bless them for their efforts?
Will You love all those children there, the ones whose lunch accounts aren’t full, the ones who feel alone? Will You teach my children to be kind and unselfish and to love those who are different from them?
Will You point them back toward home just as soon as you can?
Lord, I give them to You today and everyday, trusting them to Your care.
Amen.
