From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for defending the freedom that allowed my family to create beautiful memories today without fear of attack or repression.

Happy Independence Day

A lot of people seem to think it’s über cool to criticize our nation. To make fun of those who love her. To write songs about how embarrassing it is to be American. And at the risk of sounding arrogant and downright rude, I REALLY want to tell them to pack up and go. There are people willing to risk life and limb to immigrate to this country. Let’s trade. No…that wouldn’t be nice of me. My mama raised me better than that. So instead, I’ll point out that it’s the very greatness of our hard-fought-for freedom as Americans that enables them to say, sing, write those hateful things without fear of horrible punishment.

And so, they can go on choosing to despise America. I, however, will go on choosing to see what is beautiful about America…while praying for the truly broken parts of her to be healed.

Happy Birthday, land that I love.
