How to Make Homemade Pop Tarts

by Monica on March 1, 2011

My kids love pop tarts. The thing is…they are full of artificial colors, preservatives, high fructose corn syrup and other junk I’d rather limit around here. So I saw this on my friend, Kate’s, blog and knew I had to try it myself. You could either use the refrigerated pie crusts (they come 2 to a pack) or use my favorite pie crust recipe. The homemade crust is really simple, though. I promise.

Basically, you follow these simple steps.

  1. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface…making it pretty thin.
  2. Cut it into squares/rectangles (though you can do whatever shape you want, really).
  3. Put a big blob of jam/jelly/preserves (I LOVE Polaner all-fruit blueberry).
  4. Fold the crust over and seal with fingers or fork.
  5. Bake for 10-12 minutes at 425-degrees. They’ll smell heavenly!
  6. After they are cooled, mix 1 cup of powdered sugar with 3 T of milk for the glaze.
  7. The glaze will harden and you can either eat them now or freeze them for later.

So easy and so much better for my small people. I may have to make a bigger batch next time, though, because I’ve already eaten two while they’re at school. Oops!

I have tried and tried to avoid artificial food coloring/dyes in the peapod squad’s food, but it is like trying to climb Mt. Everest on a tricycle…especially when most folks think I’m nuts for even caring. And the kids think I’m a seriously mean mommy, because all of the “cool” food is brightly colored with artificial stuff. The scientific evidence may not be concrete yet, but I see a HUGE difference in my kids when they consume the junk. Red 40 seems to be the biggest culprit for us, but I’d love to be able to avoid all of it.

I highly recommend this really interesting read…

November 19, 2010

For my next lazy mommy trick, I shall turn this… into these… Place the cookies with the striped-side down. Dip a marshmallow in melted chocolate (16oz of chocolate chips and 2tbs of shortening will work if you don’t have those little fancy chocolate candy melts). Stand them up on the cookies. Use yellow (or orange [...]

A Yummy Rafter of Sugar Gobblers

November 17, 2010

Did you know that a group of turkeys is called a rafter? I’ve been calling them a flock. Not that I call them much very often, but you know…when I do. I was recently corrected and now set about spreading my fowl knowledge. You’re welcome. Anywho…y’all know I’ve got 3 kindergartners. In 3 different kindergarten [...]

I got SO tired of repeating the same things over and over and over again every morning. I felt like I was barking orders and we kept getting into power-struggle arguments. Not fun. And not the way I wanted each day to begin. I created this chart that shows the expected morning routine. I just [...]

Re-purposing Old Boxes for a Rainy Day Activity

May 22, 2010

The peapod squad and I were bored this morning. It was a rainy yucky mess outside so we were stuck in the house trying to figure out how to make some fun. In an effort to STOP THE WHINING  I put my weary thinking cap on and remembered seeing something like this (a much fancier [...]
