My kids love pop tarts. The thing is…they are full of artificial colors, preservatives, high fructose corn syrup and other junk I’d rather limit around here. So I saw this on my friend, Kate’s, blog and knew I had to try it myself. You could either use the refrigerated pie crusts (they come 2 to a pack) or use my favorite pie crust recipe. The homemade crust is really simple, though. I promise.
Basically, you follow these simple steps.
- Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface…making it pretty thin.
- Cut it into squares/rectangles (though you can do whatever shape you want, really).
- Put a big blob of jam/jelly/preserves (I LOVE Polaner all-fruit blueberry).
- Fold the crust over and seal with fingers or fork.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes at 425-degrees. They’ll smell heavenly!
- After they are cooled, mix 1 cup of powdered sugar with 3 T of milk for the glaze.
- The glaze will harden and you can either eat them now or freeze them for later.
So easy and so much better for my small people. I may have to make a bigger batch next time, though, because I’ve already eaten two while they’re at school. Oops!
