RIP “Common Sense”

by Monica on September 6, 2010

When signs like this

and this

and this

are necessary, there’s obviously a problem. I see things like this and just laugh at how ridiculous it is that these signs are necessary. But they are. Because common sense is dying a slow and painful death. That, and stupid people are reproducing at an alarming rate. It’s true. I say it all the time. I’m very self-righteous in my indignation.

So imagine my horror when this conversation took place in my house tonight.

Hubby: Monica, you need to stop using these blue gel dot thingies in the toilet. Someone is playing with them. It’s all smeared around in there.

Me: Who would play with that? Gross!

Split: Oh yeah, Mommy. Sweet Pea was playing with it again.

Me: What?!?! Again?!?! You mean she routinely touches that stuff? Sweet Pea, come here NOW!!!

Sweet (strolling in like nothing is wrong): What, Mommy? What’s-a-matter?

Me: Did you touch the blue gel dot in the toilet?

Sweet: Maybe I did. Am I in trouble?

Me: Yes, of course. Why on earth would you touch something in the toilet? You’re never supposed to put your hand in the toilet! That is disgusting! You know that!!

Sweet: But Mommy…you’ve never told me not to put my hand in the toilet. I didn’t know.

Snap: Yeah, Mommy. She’s right. You never told us that.

And then I started screaming something about not thinking it was necessary to tell them something they should already know because I assumed they were smarter than that…probably not great Mommy stuff to say but GOOD GRIEF!!!

Seriously? I’ve never told them not to climb up on the roof and jump either. And I’m pretty sure I’ve never told them not to drink the shampoo. Wonder if I should make a list of common sense things to tell them just in case they don’t already know!!

Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out. Count slowly to ten.

Actually, there is a good reason for the 3rd sign. People from China still use squatty potties (looks like a urinal in the floor) and they think it is extremely gross to sit on a toilet where others sit. At the college here, they are having to teach the international students that you don’t stand up on the potty.

Oh my goodness.

The Chicken was the same way and even at nearly 13 I still wonder about her common sense. I think it must be all that teaching for testing that is drilling the common sense right outta their brains.
