I always look forward to picking up the peapod squad from school every afternoon. When they see me approaching their station in the pick-up line, they get all excited and start to wave to me. As soon as the van door slides open, they pile in…quick to reach up to hug me and tell me they missed me before racing to tell me everything about their day.
Today, though, was especially eventful.
Snap: Hey, Mom. I missed you today. I’m kinda’ scared to tell you about my day, though.
Me: Uh-oh. Did you get in trouble?
Snap: No. I didn’t get in trouble. The teacher said I wasn’t in trouble. But I know who I’m going to marry now, Mom, and I’m a little scared to tell you anything else about it.
Me: I think you need to spill it, Snap. What did you do?
Snap: Well I kinda’ kissed a girl. She’s so cute, Mom. And she’s the most funnest girl in my whole class. And she’s a good girl, Mom. She never gets in trouble at all. And I’m going to marry her definitely. So I had to kiss her.
Me: You “had” to? Tell me, son…where did you kiss her?
Snap: The playground.
Me: No, I mean where ON HER did you kiss?
Snap: Well actually…two places, Mom. But I didn’t get in trouble. Promise me you know I didn’t get in trouble.
Me: Where, Snap?
Snap: On the cheek and on the mouth. Then our friend told on us and the teacher told us we needed to have a little talk. She wasn’t mad, though, Mom. I know because she was smiling while she was telling us that we had to keep our kisses to ourselves from now on. No more kissing at school, she said.
Me: I think that’s a good idea. Keep your kisses to yourself.
Snap: But now I REALLY can’t wait for my birthday, Mom.
Me: What does your birthday (5 months away) have to do with any of this?
Snap: ‘Cause I invited her to my house for my birthday and I can kiss her again then since the teacher said we can’t kiss at school anymore. I’m gonna’ kiss her a lot at my birthday party, right Mom?
Me: You should talk to your dad about this when he gets home.
Kindergarten, people. Kindergarten!! I’m scared. And I bet this little girl is in the Chinese Yo-Yo Club.
