Not quite the “education” I was hoping for

by Monica on March 5, 2009

We took the peapod squad to our favorite Chinese restaurant recently…trying to expose them to other cultural cuisines. The owner knows we have triplets (or "triples" as she calls them) and is always asking us to bring them in there (hubby is usually just picking up take-out for the 2 of us). The kids were thrilled! They sometimes watch Ni Hao, Kai-lan and were totally excited to be able to say "hello" in Mandarin to the restaurant owner. I was so proud of them. What multicultural geniuses, right?

So they were watching Kai-lan again this morning. I admit I was a bit tuned-out, because I've watched it with them enough times to know that there is nothing inappropriate at all in the show (you'd be surprised how many "kids" shows require a great deal of parental supervision/correction/explanation). I took full advantage of their interest in Chinese education and got some housework done. I tuned-in very quickly, however, when Sweet, Snap and Split started repeating the Mandarin word of the day. This is why…

(note: turn your volume up because I took this with my camera from our tv…not fabulous sound quality)

Apparently, (the Mandarin word for "snow") sounds an awful lot like something I do not want to hear from the peapod squad. Too late. Remember that they're geniuses? ;-) They're never going to forget their new word. And don't you figure they'll just be all happy to show it off?

I can't wait.

oh dear… ROFL… but hey think of it this way, anyone who thinks they are saying something inappropriate just isn’t as smart or as cultured as your three geniuses (genei?)and that is their loss!

One advantage… they won’t have a lot of opportunity to use their new word as they are not around snow much.

GIve me a Break, lots of languages have sounds that are similar to our American slang/curse words. I still love the show no matter what and will still allow my daughter to continue watching it as she is turning 3 June 27, 2009 and her cousins are part chinese. I think diversity is a great thing!!! You are reading too much into the words, remember it’s chinese not english.

Amanda…I hope you are joking since I OBVIOUSLY was. I’m not going all Jerry Falwell on Kai-Lan. My kids still watch regularly. Just posting a funny for my blog readers…didn’t mean to upset you. If you stick around, you’ll a)gain a greater understanding of my warped sense of humor, b)see that diversity is also very important to me & c)be pretty entertained.
Happy birthday to your daughter in June. Hope you find those Kai-Lan take out boxes for her party (just saw that was what you googled to find me).
